Bouldering in Laramade

Laramade is a well-maintained granite bouldering area in the Ariège valley of the French Pyrenees, sitting at around 700 meters between Auzat and Niaux. Over 200 problems are spread across dozens of boulders in a shaded forest, with a strong concentration in the lower and mid-grades that makes it a particularly good spot for warming up or for climbers working through the 4s, 5s and 6s. Harder lines up to the 8th grade are there too, but the area's strength is in volume and accessibility rather than headline testpieces. The municipality has invested in the site — there's a proper car park, picnic tables, and composting toilets, which gives it a more welcoming feel than many forest bouldering spots.

The forested setting keeps things shady, which means Laramade is one of the few areas in the region where you can climb comfortably in summer. Autumn brings the best friction and most settled weather, while spring can be wetter but dries quickly on sunny days. Winter is possible on clear days, though conditions become less predictable. The area was developed in the 1990s by local climbers and still has potential for new lines. For anyone basing themselves in the Ariège for a climbing trip — or passing through the Pyrenees — it's a solid stop with a relaxed atmosphere and enough problems to fill a good day or two.
