Bouldering in Churnet

Churnet is a sheltered sandstone valley in Staffordshire, right on the southern edge of the Peak District and a stone's throw from the Alton Towers theme park, hiding one of the densest concentrations of quality bouldering in central England. The rock is clean, orange-tinged sandstone pulled into short, steep walls and buttresses scattered through oak and pine woodland, with Wright's Rock as the flagship sector alongside plenty of other crags tucked away along the hillside. Expect climbing built around positive crimps, sharp pockets, the occasional pebble feature and a surprising amount of sloper work — technical feet matter as much as raw pull. With over 600 problems documented and a wide spread of grades, Churnet stands on its own rather than being treated as a Peak overflow venue.

The valley orientation means bouldering in Churnet can be done almost year-round: deep shade and wind protection keep summer sessions workable, while drier winter spells give the best friction. Damp weather is the main enemy — the rock can go green and slippery, so it pays to check conditions before driving out. Access is straightforward from Stoke-on-Trent or Derby, with short woodland walk-ins from nearby parking. It's a low-key, local-feeling spot where you're more likely to bump into a handful of regulars than a crowd, and that quiet character is a big part of what makes the sandstone here worth a trip.
