Yugawara Maku Iwa sits on the sun-exposed southern slopes of Mount Maku, inside Makuyama Park in Yugawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, and it is one of the easiest climbing day-trips you can do out of Tokyo. The rock is andesite — a dense volcanic stone formed by ancient lava domes on the outer ring of Hakone — and while the area is better known for its sport routes, a scattering of good boulders among the fruit trees and terraces gives it a legitimate bouldering scene too. The style is short and direct: compact walls, steep slabs, crimps and pockets on fairly sharp rock, with problems tucked along the hillside rather than gathered in one obvious field. The setting is unusually scenic, with the park's famous plum blossoms in late winter adding a distinctly Japanese flavour to a climbing day.

Yugawara shines in winter. The south-facing hillside catches the sun, keeping the rock warm enough to climb comfortably when most of Japan is shut down by cold, and friction is excellent on those clear, dry days. Summer is generally too hot and humid to be enjoyable. Access is exceptionally easy: Yugawara station on the Tōkaidō line connects directly with central Tokyo, and a short bus or taxi ride brings you to Makuyama Park and the crag. Landings along the paths can be uneven and the rock is sharp enough to chew through skin quickly, so tape and decent pad coverage go a long way. Bouldering in Yugawara Maku Iwa is a perfect winter escape from Tokyo — low commitment, easy logistics, and a very Japanese atmosphere you won't find in the alpine zones.
