Ena Kasagiyama is one of the most distinctive bouldering areas in central Japan, set on the flanks of Mount Kasagi in Ena, Gifu Prefecture, where the rock is a rough volcanic tuff that produces some of the most unusual textures you'll climb on anywhere. The boulders are generally tall and intimidating — highballs are very much the norm rather than the exception — with styles ranging from balancey slab climbing on crystalline friction to powerful crimping and cracks on the steeper faces. The grade range is broad, from around 3B up to 8B, and the sheer quality and atmosphere of the place give it a near-mythical reputation among Japanese climbers. The mountain itself is also famous for a rare natural phenomenon: the glowing moss that grows in shaded crevices and has earned the area protected-site status.

The best windows for Kasagiyama are autumn and early winter, when the air is cold and dry and friction peaks; spring works too, while the humid Japanese summer is best avoided. At over 1000 meters of elevation, temperatures stay cooler than down in the valleys, which helps extend the season. Access is by car from Ena city, with trailheads leading directly to the climbing sectors; parking should be done thoughtfully, leaving room for local residents and agricultural vehicles. Landings can be uneven and the highball nature of many lines means a serious pad stack and reliable spotters are essential. Bouldering in Ena Kasagiyama is not about ticking numbers — it's about committing to big lines on unique stone in a very Japanese setting.
