Bouldering in Lagundo/Algund

Lagundo, near Merano in South Tyrol, is one of the largest and most established bouldering areas in the region. Hundreds of gneiss boulders are scattered through the forest across 15 different sectors, offering everything from easy warm-ups to problems well into the eighth grade. The climbing is technical and varied — friction-dependent slabs, crimpy faces and the occasional roof — all on solid, textured gneiss that has been attracting climbers since the area was first developed in the late 1990s. The forested setting provides shade on warm days, and the boulders are generally well maintained with clear landings.

Despite facing south, the tree cover means the area is climbable through most of the year, though winter and the cooler months tend to offer the best friction — summer can get uncomfortably warm. Spring and autumn strike a good balance between conditions and daylight. Lagundo is easy to reach from Merano and well connected by public transport, making it a natural stop for anyone climbing their way through the Alps. The concentration of quality mid-grade problems is particularly strong, though there's enough at both ends of the spectrum to keep everyone busy.
