Bouldering in Els Graus

Els Graus lies on the flanks of the Pedraforca, above the village of Saldes in the Serra d'Ensija in Catalonia, and it's one of those zones that still feels like it's being written. The climbing happens across two large limestone quarries that have sat quietly in the mountains with barely any published reference, even though people have been exploring and opening lines here for years. The style is a proper mix: compact grey slabs demanding precise feet, steep walls and overhangs with powerful lines on crimps and pockets, and a handful of tall, committing highballs that raise the stakes well above the usual pad session. Expect smaller standalone blocks scattered across the terrain as well, and plenty of untouched stone — the new-routing potential is what really defines this place.

Conditions are unusual because of the altitude and orientation. In winter the zone tends to sit under snow, and in summer the near-total lack of trees means the sun beats down hard with no real escape, so the best windows fall in spring and autumn when temperatures are cool but the stone is dry. Saldes itself is the natural base — a tiny mountain village at the foot of the Pedraforca. The approach is not particularly short: from the parking you drop down to cross the Riera Salada and then climb back up to the quarries, and depending on which sector you're heading to, the walk can get fairly long. This is not a polished, guidebook-ready crag. Bouldering in Els Graus feels closer to exploration than ticking, which is exactly why it's worth the trip for anyone drawn to quiet Pyrenean limestone with room to leave their own mark.
