The sandstone is sensitive to moisture, so climbing after rain is strictly off the table — the holds will break if you force it, and respecting drying periods is non-negotiable. The best conditions come in dry spells through spring, early summer and autumn, while hot midsummer and wet winters are best avoided. Access is easy from Karlsruhe, Stuttgart or Freiburg, with most sectors a short drive from small villages scattered through the forest. One local quirk worth knowing: ticks are common in the undergrowth, so check yourself carefully after walking into the blocks. Bouldering in Schwarzwald is less about a single famous crag and more about slowly working your way through a vast, quiet forest full of stone.
